🌿 #QGrow June: Nurture & Nature - Caring for What’s Growing
June is one of the most rewarding months in the garden — everything we’ve sown and planted over spring is flourishing, pollinators are out in full force, and the allotment is buzzing with life.
Now’s the time to pause, care, and nurture what’s growing. With a little attention and some wildlife-friendly maintenance, we’ll keep our gardens and allotments thriving all summer long.
🌱 Feed, Water & Watch It Thrive
By June, plants are growing fast -but that means they need a little support from us.
Top Tasks for the Month:
Water wisely: Water early morning or evening to reduce evaporation. A good soak every few days is better than a light sprinkle daily.
Mulch beds: Apply a layer of compost, bark, or leaf mould around plants to lock in moisture and keep weeds down.
Feed naturally: Use homemade plant feed (nettle or comfrey tea) or organic fertiliser to give veg and flowers a mid-season boost.
Stake tall plants: Support floppy stems like delphiniums, peas, and our beloved sweetpea tepee at the allotment.
🌸 The Sweetpea Tepee in Bloom
Back in January, we started our sweetpeas indoors and now they’re finally showing off!
Our #QGrow sweetpea tepee is becoming a colourful centrepiece, full of scent and pollinators. Keep picking flowers regularly to encourage more blooms and prevent seed-setting too early.
If you’re growing your own, pinch out side shoots, tie in climbing stems, and enjoy their long-lasting display.
🪴 Natural Pest Control
June can also bring a few uninvited guests, but pesticides aren’t the answer.
Try these eco-friendly pest control tips:
Companion planting: Marigolds near beans deter aphids; basil near tomatoes helps repel whitefly.
Encourage predators: Ladybirds, hoverflies, and birds all help manage pests naturally.
Wild corners: Leave patches of long grass or log piles to give beneficial insects a home.
🐝 Water for Wildlife
Pollinators and small animals need water too! Create simple watering stations by:
Placing a shallow dish of water with pebbles or marbles for insects to land safely.
Keeping bird baths clean and topped up.
Leaving a few shaded puddles or damp soil areas for butterflies and bees.
These small actions make a huge difference during warmer weather.
🥬 Harvest & Plan Ahead
Some early crops will be ready to pick - radishes, lettuce, broad beans, and peas are all reaching their best now. Harvest regularly to keep plants producing, and re-sow gaps with quick-growing salad crops for a continuous supply.
