Quorum Launches Six-Week BSL Training in Partnership with Becoming Visible

Quorum is proud to announce the launch of a six-week training programme in partnership with Becoming Visible, designed to raise awareness of Deaf culture and provide an introduction to British Sign Language (BSL).

The programme began with two Deaf Awareness sessions, held on 9 and 16 September in the Q11 (Rimba Raya) meeting room. These engaging sessions introduced attendees to Deaf identity, language and culture, helping participants to understand barriers faced by the Deaf community and the importance of inclusive communication.

Building on this foundation, the next four sessions will focus on British Sign Language. Running from 30 September through to 28 October, participants will learn greetings (including fingerspelling), numbers, colours and weather. All sessions will be taught visually, with no translator present, ensuring an immersive learning experience.

Claire Lusk, Events Manager at Quorum, said:

“We’re thrilled to be working with Becoming Visible on this fantastic training opportunity. The Deaf Awareness sessions have already been eye-opening for our community, and we’re excited to see colleagues build practical BSL skills that can make a real difference in everyday interactions.”

The training is being delivered by Julie Stephenson, Training Co-ordinator and BSL Teacher at Becoming Visible. Julie, who was born Deaf, brings a wealth of expertise and lived experience to the sessions.

Julie Stephenson commented:

“It’s been inspiring to see the enthusiasm from everyone at Quorum. Learning BSL is not just about communication - it’s about connection, respect and inclusivity. By embracing Deaf awareness and sign language, we take important steps toward breaking down barriers and building stronger communities.”

The upcoming sessions will run at 12.30pm – 1.30pm in Q11 (Rimba Raya) Meeting Room on:

  • Tuesday 30 September

  • Tuesday 14 October

  • Tuesday 21 October

  • Tuesday 28 October

Participants are encouraged to attend all four sessions to get the maximum benefit from the training.
